Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Canada) Inc. located in Laval, Quebec, Canada, is currently looking for an experienced, highly motivated, creative and innovative chemist, with a proven track record in the area of process chemistry, and/or optimization of new chemical transformations. The successful candidate is expected to lead a Chemistry team in charge of identifying and optimizing safe, scalable synthetic routes for early and late stage clinical development candidates, while providing synthetic building blocks to support the internal Medicinal Chemistry effort.
The candidate must have obtained a doctorate degree (Ph.D in Medicinal or Organic Chemistry with at least 10 years of process/scale-up chemistry experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of discovering and/or optimizing new chemical transformations leading to scalable routes. It is essential for the candidate to demonstrate scientific excellence and strategic leadership and be able to effectively manage and develop his/her staff.
Lead a dynamic team of chemists that develop synthetic routes in support of research;
Be a significant contributor to the Vertex pipeline through interactions with colleagues in global pre-clinical development disciplines such a Process Chemistry, Analytical Development, Formulation and Outsourcing;
Provides both process chemistry and analytical expertise to the group;
Provides leadership and process development expertise to the scientists in this group and to the small molecule development program;
Responsible for oversight of the kilo lab, API manufacturing (non-GMP synthesis of building blocks to support medicinal chemists, and oversight of CROs.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Ph.D. in Medicinal or Organic Chemistry
10+ years industrial experience of process chemistry experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry
5 + years in the supervision of a group of process chemistry involved in the development and characterization of clinically relevant molecules
Proven track record in the design of chemistry strategies, and in solving complex synthetic problems
A solid scientific and technical experience in Analytical Chemistry/Analytical Development
Strong working knowledge of reaction mechanisms; expertise in process optimization and crystallization techniques . Individuals should be industry-focused with a track record of manufacturing small molecules in early stages of pre-clinical development
A strong publication record and/or prior receipt of patents are desired
Bilingualism (English and French) is a definite asset
Excellent communication skills both oral and written
