Area General Manager

School Bus Operations for Saskatchewan

 

First Student, North America’s largest and leading provider of student transportation services, offers an exceptional opportunity for an Area General Manager for the School Bus Operations in Saskatchewan.

 

PURPOSE: Oversee the daily operation of multiple school bus facilities, ensuring appropriate attention to customer service, employee relations and cost control. Safety, training, employee & customer care are key to the business.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Mentor/coach Branch (Location) Managers and Operations (Assistant Location Managers) to improve business/personal skills and thereby enhance their effectiveness in developing their individual businesses

Act as the central customer relations representative, in conjunction with branch management for their area of responsibility

Act as lead negotiator for both customer and employee contracts

Act as local business development/marketing agent in order to maintain current customer contracts as well as developing contracts to develop relationships that would provide growth opportunities

Analyze branch financial statements with managers, reviewing variances and implementing action plans

Monitor revenue contract compliance, negotiate revenue contracts, bid tenders

Manages relationships internally with senior management and employees, employee associations and unions, externally with customers, suppliers, contractors, industry associations, the community, politicians, bureaucrats, regulatory agencies and the media

Monitor compliance with maintenance programs & ensure they are completed in a cost efficient, timely manner

Recommends and justifies capital expenditures for branches and shops

Co-ordinates allocation of vehicles between branches meeting business activity, contractual obligation & effective management of assets

Maintain an ongoing knowledge of industry practices and trends.  Ministry of Education, Ministry of Transportation and Transport Canada statutory requirements, environmental requirements, Labour Codes, Employment Standards and Human Rights Act, Health & Safety and Workers Compensation as they relate to the branch operations.

Monitor safety standards of branches within area of responsibility

Coach and develop management trainees for succession planning purposes

Formulate a strategic plan for the area with an emphasis on growth, and the development of people

Establish strong collaborative working/interpersonal relationship with operating personnel, ensuring direction and compliance with initiatives, business plans, and company policy

Maintain a high profile with key customers, government bodies and stakeholders within the service area

 

EDUCATION:   Post-secondary education with emphasis on Business related studies

 

EXPERIENCE / KNOWLEDGE:

Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to provide initiative and leadership

Five to ten years’ progressive management experience, preferably in the school bus or other transportation industries

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:    

Office environment with frequent travel to branches, customer offices and stakeholders within area of responsibility
